I am a web developer with my own company and I've been using rack space for about two years. I am 99.9% satisfied and would be willing to recommend them to anybody. For this review I'll give you both negatives and positives.
Since there's only one negative I'll start here first. Rackspace is expensive, so just deal with it. For my company, I am willing to pay a little more to get the service and support I need. It makes a lot more financial sense to pay extra for web hosting rather than loose a couple of days worth of sales because a server goes down.
The thing I love most about Rackspace is their support staff. Some companies get you up and running and then forget about you until you make a call or submit a ticket. Rackspace has not treated me that way. They're always looking out for potential problems and offering solutions ahead of time. In one case they spotted a potential security risk in one of my sites and contacted me with a possible solution. How many other web hosting companies would do that?
Rackspace has great support 24/7, especially over the phone. I've never had to wait more than 30 seconds before talking to a support tech who was eager to help me. I've also had to use the tickets a couple of times and found that I was answered within 5 to 10 minutes. They keep a running record of all my ticket conversations so I can still go back and look at some from six months ago. That's helpful when I run into a repeated issue that was solved before. I just look up the ticket, apply the solution, and I'm on my way.
My other positive about Rackspace is my account manager. Though it's not like I talk to him every week, we do have regular conversations when he calls me to check on things. One time he even called and recommended I add some extra space because it looked like I was going to see a spike in business. I don't know how he knew, but he was right. When the hit came I was already set up to deal with it. I don't know if all of their account managers are as good as mine, but I sure hope so.
In closing, I would definitely say that Rackspace hosting is worth it in the long run. Just like I'll spend a little more to get a quality car rather than buying a piece of junk, I'm willing to spend a little more for 100% uptime and great phone support. As far as I'm concerned, my business is only as good as my web hosting company. Thank you Rackspace for a job well done!
